The Hawaiian Crows face much more destructive threats–extreme loss of habitat; malaria, the scourge of so many Hawaiian species; predators–rodents, cats and the ‘Io, the Hawaiian Hawk. Lead shot injured and killed condors young and old, lead in the carrion they ate, lead in the bullets that hunters shot at them.

I find it astonishing that people argue of whether feral cats are bad for birds in North America. The plethora of approaches to the feral Cat problem is not an outcome of a diversity of great ideas; it is the ugly chimera of inappropriate compromise among biased and often poorly informed stakeholders. Let me tell you this: They are.

Notably, this is a vey small number compared to the number of rodents killed by the same cats. Also, in relatively natural, or wild, lands in much of the US the feral cat population will be limited by a healthy wild predator population. High tension line strikes kill tens of thousand annually, as do electrocutions on power lines.

I will admit that there are legitimate concerns that have been raised about falconry – birds that are not native to an area sometimes escape and become feral; humans should minimize their influence on nature. I catch a glimpse of a small rodent disappearing into a burrow. But I believe the overall benefits outweigh the negatives.
