The animal is well-treated during its life in terms of having space to roam, living free of fear and abuse, and being well-fed in clean conditions. In other words, the proverbial happy farm animal. In my opinion, and I am a vegetarian, the second definition of humane is the MINIMAL that we should expect.

I looked online and all I could find was this article on The Vegetarian Site. Trader Joe's, a national specialty grocer, offers a large range of vegan and soy products. Tags: eggs consumption farm animal welfare groceries. But are they really free-range eggs? They also offer "Cage Free" eggs.

Livestock production consumes 70 percent of the water in the American West -- water so heavily subsidized that if irrigation supports were removed, ground beef would cost $35 a pound. Nearly 70 percent of all the antibiotics produced are fed to farmed animals to prevent (not treat) disease.

.: One message is that there's nothing wrong with eating animals, and in fact it's fantastic and thrilling and a win-win-win (people-planet-profits) when you eat animals that were "produced" by Polyface Farms. There's no remotely vegan or even vegetarian (though I'm not even sure what the latter would look like) message.

Beyond the environmental impacts of meat production there is a basic ethical issue involved. So here is an even more modest proposal than roasting Fido: Try eating only what animals you are willing to kill with your own hands. My interactions with farm animals have been as affectionate and fun as any I've had with dogs or cats.
