Odd family trees, the Hippopotamus is closely related to whales, dolphins and porpoises, the elephant is closely related to manatees, dougongs (reasonable), and the little rock hyrax, yes a little mountain loving hamster is related to the thickest b h in the land, also horses are closely related to rhinos and tapirs.

The bird rears up, calls and splashes, it thrashes around on the surface and dives and porpoises about. A quick peek revealed a rapidly growing family of six nestlings. As we drive along we invariably have an adult Baird’s swirling around the truck, trying to lead it away from its family. It would be a hard act to ignore.

I searched the entire northern end of the park, including the golf course, the reflecting pool, the open water by Porpoise Bridge, and every open grassy spot I could find. It was another nice look but I didn’t linger as I wanted to get home and enjoy the rest of the day with the family. I searched Meadow Lake.

This is one of the smallest dolphin species in the world, not much bigger than the common Harbour Porpoise Americans might be familiar with. Which has always mystified me slightly. Akaroa Harbour. So you can imagine my great pleasure when it worked out for me to stay in California for two extra days at the end of our family vacation out west. I’m sad to say that once the adrenaline rush of finally seeing a representative of my most-wanted bird family wore off the pain came back and it was pretty harsh. This one did too.
