During our three week visit to Singapore in March we spent a good part of each day walking and birding. About halfway between Marymount Road and Upper Thomson Road we had the pleasure of sitting and observing Blue-crowned Hanging Parrots. Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot. Singapore is a great place to enjoy the woodpecker family.

Birds of the Indonesian Archipelago covers 1,417 species, 601 endemics, 98 vagrants, 8 introduced and 18 undescribed species. Only one bird species has become extinct (Javan Lapwing), but many others are endangered, with some considered close to extinction (not surprising in an area with species restricted to one or two small islands).

For the moment I’ll stick with the split babbler families although I may relump the laughingthrushes, ground and tree babblers per Molye et al (2012). Since I’m the New Zealand beat writer I’ll be using their names for their species, but for clarity I will give other commonly used names if a species has them.

If you are looking for something more colourful then you can’t go wrong with Australian King Parrots and Satin Bowerbirds and their bowers ! More than three hundred bird species have been recorded in Broome and there is plenty of variety. The bird species has either got lost on migration or arrived due to inclement weather.
