Back when I was a kid growing up in California’s San Mateo County in the 60s and 70s, my family would occasionally drive 45 minutes west and south to Bean Hollow State Beach. Little did I imagine that someday I would live much of my life in that same Spanish language. and my first member of the auk/puffin family.

It spends its life flying or floating on ocean water, sometimes staying up to ten years between landfalls; earning it the additional moniker “Wideawake Tern.” Perhaps it’s fitting that Sooty should choose to nest with all its family on one of the most inaccessible national parks (for humans) in the world.
