The exploration of triads within the avifauna of Trinidad and Tobago has taken me through various families and species groups on this blog. The Red-crowned Woodpecker is one of several species that are found throughout northern South America and Tobago but are absent from Trinidad. Red-crowned Woodpecker. Olivaceous Woodcreeper.

But there is one kind of tick that I genuinely do enjoy, and as I do more and more birding it becomes harder and harder to get; new families. Getting entirely new families is easy when you start birding. Sometimes you may even lose them, like the aforementioned woodswallows which are probably no longer a family.

There are also 14 species of New World Barbets and 2 species of Toucan-Barbets (all in South America). Unfortunately, I have so far seen only a few of them, and none of the ones in the Americas … but here are ten that I have seen and got halfway decent photos of. That Smith Family is so depressing”.
