For my new book, due out in 2012 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I’ve been researching sandhill crane hunting. Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. I’ve received letters and emails from a number of avid hunters who find the concept of shooting cranes repugnant.

Green-and-rufous Kingfisher is the only Cholorceryle species I haven’t seen, so observing one would complete a genus in this fascinating family. These strange birds are two species in their own family; White-necked or Yellow-headed, endemic to the Upper Guinea forests and Grey-necked or Red-headed, restricted to Lower Guinea forests. One of these colonies has now been opened to tourism after researchers studying the birds deemed visits by birders to be non-disruptive.
