But only two states have more than one bird named for them: Hawaii and California, with nine and seven extant and eponymous species, respectively. I suppose a case could be made for renaming California’s two avian endemics – the Yellow-billed Magpie and the Island Scrub-Jay – after the state to pull it into a tie with Hawaii.

Didn’t every household have a copy of a Peterson Field Guide on the shelf, maybe a third or fourth edition that family members grew up with, which they could quickly consult to see the arrow pointing to that belly band? 27, 2015 Christian Gutierrez, Raymond Justice, and Carter Mesker went on a camping trip to Ka’ena Point Natural Area Reserve on Oahu, Hawaii. They were simply sent to Family Court. Should the plea be deferred, the message will be clear: the rights of sadistic young killers are far more important than those whose lives they affect.

We’ve only recently begun to completely piece it together, using fossils and scientific analysis, but what is shows is that, once upon a time, the rail family was one of the most, if not the most, species rich family of birds in the world. But they are, as a family, prone to remarkable wandering. What a horror!
