A lot of destinations were mentioned, with Central and South America leading the way, New Guinea, Indonesia and Australia appearing only at the middle of the list, and African countries (South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania and Madagascar) lagging at the end of the list. Day after day went by, with much sound but no sight of the peacocks.

Other than these, in the wider region at the moment only Papua New Guinea has one 300+ hotspot, but it belongs to the Australian and not the Oriental region. Other wildlife includes Asian Elephant , Tiger , Leopard. Other wildlife includes Phayre’s Leaf Monkey. Other countries still have to reach the 300 birds threshold.

Birds of the Indonesian Archipelago describes all 1,456 bird species (39 species more than in the first edition) within 107 bird families known to occur in the region, including 628 endemics (27 endemics more than in the 1st edition) and 10 species yet to be formally described (down from 18 in the 1st edition).

Families that are endemic to the continent include such strange birds as Shoebill , Secretarybird , Hamerkop , mousebirds and rockfowl ( picathartes ) and delightful groups including bushshrikes, sugarbirds, rockjumpers, woodhoopoes, turacos and hyliotas. Most importantly the Upper Guinea forests, one of Africa’s two major rainforest regions (the other being the far more extensive Lower Guinea forests of the Congo basin and surrounding areas). Although this park was logged in the past, as a national park it is one of the few forests in Ghana that is really protected. .

They are Ecuador for the Galapagos, Gabon for the bais, Madagascar, New Guinea and New Caledonia for everything. I have been to 11 countries to watch wildlife that this species lives in. Looking over my list, it seems I’m a fairly shallow wildlife watcher interested in spectacle. I have stood NEXT to someone that saw it.

But for those seeking wildlife there is plenty to see without ever leaving the city, and most itineries at least allow one day of birdwatching within and immediately around this coastal resort city. This is a migrant from New Guinea, which breeds mostly on small offshore islands and flies each day to the mainland to feed.
