There is a Chinese proverb stating “Laws control a lesser person, right conduct controls a greater one.” T he European Green Woodpecker (Visselhoevede, Germany) is closely related to the Grey-headed Woodpecker, but less demanding in terms of its habitat ( source ). Kind of like a diesel version.

“How about Pineapple Gose-beak?” – Uinta Brewing Company: Flamingose

These unwanted orphans of German brewing were mainly left to fend for themselves in the oncoming dissolution of regional specialties as the nation unified its government – and its brewing laws. It became extinct on two occasions, immediately after the Second World War, and again in the final days of Communist power in East Germany.

Our Best Birds of 2020
