According to the article, "Zoochosis is a term used by animal rights activists in reference to the degrading effect of zoos on animals that have been kept in captivity over a long period of time. It's the first time I've ever heard the term.

They are forced to work in factories owned by a hideous woman, Gretsch. Animals are indeed enslaved, but in real life they're not making widgets in factories. I'm giving the book a vegan/animal rights message because that's my lens. There is no mention of food or skin or zoos. For instance, the animals are enslaved.
