WPAs: America’s Duck Factories

The region has justifiably been referred to as the “Duck Factory of North America.” Individual WPAs are organized into Wetland Management Districts (WMDs) for administration by FWS. Thus, for birders, WPAs are vitally important for populations of many waterfowl as well as shorebirds, grassland species, and other migratory species.

Slowing down Chimney Swifts

Here in the southeast, we get to watch as the flocks of sickle-winged midge tyrants funnel back south again every fall, pausing to congregate most evenings in the old smokestacks that tower above the empty tobacco factories in downtown Durham, North Carolina. And the next day they’re gone, coursing over the skies of South America.

The Gap Between Wildlife and the Animal Rights Movement

The animal rights movement is (rightly) closely associated with protesting things like factory farming, dogfighting, etc…basically, the mistreatment of animals. What I don’t understand is why animal rights organizations almost completely ignore wildlife. This makes perfect sense.

Factory farming considers nature an obstacle to overcome" (34). Ever, in fact. In all fairness, most people's only reference is PETA.
