If Mexico City itself was not high enough, the mountains to the south rise above 12,300 feet and I was there looking for a Sierra Madre Sparrow to confirm a sighting of this rare and local sparrow from 15 years ago. Just to let you know, the sparrow did not show and I had to make do with some specialty Mexican warblers instead.

Sure, Miami and the Florida Keys do not boast any endemics ( ‘Cape Sable’ Seaside Sparrow is close) at the species level. Coupled with its geologic youth, this makes the southern tip of the state function as a bit of an island experiment. However, few realize how unique and how good the birding can be here.

Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. But after repeated good experiences with birders as individuals, Mr Jordan has consented to allow the bird to be made public before it leaves. Melanerpes lewis is, to put it simply, a really cool bird.
