My group watched this leopard walking parallel to the road, then back into the grass, and then–whooop–up a tree, where he relaxed while being watched by people in at least twenty vehicles. The leopards place their kill in a tree, protecting it from poaching by other predators. This is a big young ‘un!

If you cannot share the bird with your guest, try not to share the experience because it makes everything they have seen a little league birding, compared to your mega tick. And never, but absolutely never, drop your bins to your chest and with a puzzling expression say: “I think I’ve just seen a leopard!”. But that is the fun of it.”.

This is the place, after all, that people see Sunda Clouded Leopards! Oh, there were Buffy Fish-owls. But I believe birding should be more than just “getting birds” Danum Valley is an experience, and I can’t recommend it enough. Night is for the frogs. A female Crested Fireback. Did I mention them? And wine.

For 9 months of the year, this great, bellowing herd can be found in the Serengeti and watching the long lines of grunting wildebeest moving across the plains is truly a remarkable experience. And of course the big game is an added bonus. Sunset over the Ngorongoro Crater, a sight to behold!

Hornbills are spectacular under any circumstances, but when a pair lands in a bush beside you at eye-level and begin mutual preening , it makes for a spectacular experience. It was easily one of the best birding experiences I’ve ever had, even impressing my nonbirder fiance. You can read more about his experience here.

Yala National Park is brimming with wildlife and there are good chances of seeing Leopard , Sloth Bear and Asian Elephant , while it is also excellent for dry-zone birds, while the nearby Bundala coastal marshes and Palatupana ponds are good spots for shorebirds.
