It was an exciting experience, though a remarkably chilly one, as winters in Castile and León can be very cold. At the time we were looking, without success, for White-backed Woodpeckers. On another trip, this time to Slovakia, I heard wolves howling, a wonderfully spine-tingling sound.

What the rings reveal

I’d love to have known where and when the Great Spotted Woodpecker in my photograph below was ringed, but though the ring is clearly visible, the number stamped on it isn’t. However, in recent years there’s been a growing trend to mark bigger birds, such as wildfowl and waders, with either colour rings, or Darvic plastic rings.
