Best Bird of the Weekend (First of August 2017)

However, I did spot a curious assemblage of House Sparrows perched in a row along the roofline of one specific house. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was the coolest turkey he’s ever seen, the Ocellated Turkey of Central America, seen in a wonderful place: Tikal in Guatemala! How about you?

Amazingly, everyone showed up at dawn except for one person, who’d had a near-death experience with me on Colombia’s Sumapaz paramo, an acceptable excuse for a no-show. Legend has it he can hear birds as far away as Guatemala. Fortunately, Leonardo has amazing hearing.

Mexican Warblers

If Mexico City itself was not high enough, the mountains to the south rise above 12,300 feet and I was there looking for a Sierra Madre Sparrow to confirm a sighting of this rare and local sparrow from 15 years ago. Just to let you know, the sparrow did not show and I had to make do with some specialty Mexican warblers instead.

The Top 25 Target Birds to Look for in Costa Rica

While this amazing bird can also be readily seen in Guatemala, western Panama, and a few other places, ease of access in Costa Rica and fantastic appearance put it onto this list. Endangered and awesome, it’s pretty easy to experience this big parrot in the Pacific lowlands of Costa Rica from Tarcoles north to near Nicaragua.
