Our group watching the first Snow Leopard from a knoll above our camp in Hemis National Park. At this very spot, on our first afternoon in the park, and within half an hour of officially beginning our Snow Leopard search, our expert local spotter had exclaimed “ Shan !!” – the Ladakhi name for Snow Leopard.

Some birders told me they had no birding community in their home areas, which, for me, encapsulated the best reason behind the Safari (and other ABA big events)–the development of a national birding community. The leopards place their kill in a tree, protecting it from poaching by other predators.

The next day my foot was mended enough to head back into the bush, but it was nice that my day in camp was as eventful as the bush would have been! Even a Leopard Tortoise dropped by! Blue Waxbill.
