Our group watching the first Snow Leopard from a knoll above our camp in Hemis National Park. At this very spot, on our first afternoon in the park, and within half an hour of officially beginning our Snow Leopard search, our expert local spotter had exclaimed “ Shan !!” – the Ladakhi name for Snow Leopard.

Some birders told me they had no birding community in their home areas, which, for me, encapsulated the best reason behind the Safari (and other ABA big events)–the development of a national birding community. The leopards place their kill in a tree, protecting it from poaching by other predators.

And the two species were not inclined to get on, by which I mean that Lions will kill other large predators including Painted Wolves. It’s a natural event, part of the natural “Circle of Life” as Disney might have it. And Pippa, our biologist, was very concerned. Her concern was well founded. Those collars save lives.
