Lion – much easier to see than an Aardvark In contrast to East Africa, encounters with mammals while out birding in Europe are relatively few. Over the years, though, I have enjoyed a number of memorable mammal sightings in Europe. Otters may be widespread in Europe, but they are usually elusive and difficult to see.

Originally restricted to Africa, it is now also well-established in parts of Europe and South Africa. After my Przevalski experience, I now look up such names to check whether the person the bird is named after has made similar racist statements, or even done worse things. Gurney’s Sugarbird is not a name I made up.
