They look crap but presumably offer some protection for the chicks, though not from each other (see the murderous activities within the nests in my previous post ). A kingfisher with a somewhat deficient work ethic, I guess. Blue-throated Bee-eaters build nests on sticks sticking out of the water. Or speluncaphobia?

I will equally recommend a guide who finds the target bird and the one who does everything within birding ethics to find it and fails. There were not too many birds around, but during such bird-breaks, he was full of information of their cultural significance and traditional beliefs, till we find the next bird, that is.

Vamsee Juluri, Professor of Media Studies at the University of San Francisco, takes me back to graduate school when he writes of the importance of the stories we tell ourselves in " Use Free Speech to Celebrate Animal Life, Not to Enjoy Their Suffering." Isn't the mere existence of violence and suffering sufficient? What do you think?

The meat industry is inherently destructive and inhumane, there is no way to make it otherwise, and much of the harm it does to ecosystems is by inflicting suffering and death on billions of nonhuman animals, farmed and free-living, each year. He is an unabashed speciesist, putting humans on “a different moral plane from that of other animals” (11) due to various reasons, such as our “vastly greater capacity for symbolic language, culture, and ethical judgment” (11). He watched cockfighting and killed and skinned animals, but won’t eat veal.
