You see, up to this point, let’s say 1972, perhaps 1973, I had never really been exposed to a “Threatened, or Endangered” species of any kind. Now that I am here in Mexico, I finally found them! After several hours of research, my deep appreciation for this wonderful shorebird has not diminished.

Note the long yellow gape, a characteristic field mark of this species. Ferruginous Hawks were petitioned for listing under the federal Endangered Species Act in 1991 but rejected; currently they are listed as a Category 2 Species by the U.S. Obviously more research needs to be done on this magnificent raptor.
