Environmental groups have called on Obama to get rid of the USDA's Dept. Animals killed also include threatened and endangered species, a number which has steadily increased since 2005. The aerial gunning program has killed at least 10 agents and injured 28 more. Ranchers oppose the move.

New Zealand has been the recipient of a higher than average number of introduced species, in particular a range of mammals from elk to mice. This is quite a big deal for an island group that had no mammals save bats for millions of years. It is without question an unpleasant way to die for any animal.

They are rock stars in their family (or group of families, depending on what taxonomists have been smoking lately), a family that includes Scarlet Macaws , Crimson Shining-parrots , Golden Parakeets and Rainbow Lorikeets , and that is no mean feat. And then I had to leave so the next group could stare at the thing.

As the sky darkened and a chill set in, large groups of birds took off in the opposite direction for the interior of the preserve, where they would safely roost for the night. The sun began to set as literally thousands of the birds gathered to rest, feed, and socialize.
