Environmental groups have called on Obama to get rid of the USDA's Dept. Animals killed also include threatened and endangered species, a number which has steadily increased since 2005. The aerial gunning program has killed at least 10 agents and injured 28 more. Ranchers oppose the move.

Since 1976, Michigan's endangered and threatened species listing has been modified only six times--a fact [DNR's former endangered species coordinator, Todd} Hogrefe attributed to the tremendous amount of time and effort it takes DNR staff to decide which animals to include and which to leave out.

So, one might surmise, it’s OK if they get shot by hunters thinking they’re sandhill cranes? What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death.

New Zealand has been the recipient of a higher than average number of introduced species, in particular a range of mammals from elk to mice. This is quite a big deal for an island group that had no mammals save bats for millions of years. In New Zealand at least public opinion is generally behind 1080.
