Similar to other woodpeckers, monogamy is the norm in this species – in one study , less than 1% of all chicks were extra-pair young. Unfortunately, the wryneck is one of the species suffering from massive trapping in countries such as Egypt and Libya ( source ). Their sex life is similarly unspectacular.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. The African Spoonbill is one of the six global spoonbill species, and the main African one (there are also some Eurasian Spoonbills in Africa).

We sing about them, we paint them, we use them as mythic and poetic symbols for our spiritual and emotional feelings, we wear them in myriad and often colorful ways, we adopt them as household pets.
