There’s been both egg and chick predation and most pairs have laid at least two clutches of eggs over the past few months. Another interesting observation was the reaction to some loud bangs on the horizon by the shorebirds to which they nervously made a brief flight or looked out to sea.

It is much stranger and illustrative of the ways of evolution to point out that whales are a form of “hoofed animal&# (unlikely but true). One of the most interesting differences between birds and dinosaurs has to do with their eggs. The nature, distribution, and evolution of bird song is unclear.

As a Northeast birder I am familiar with the alarming decrease in the number of Red Knots along Atlantic shores and have signed petitions and written e-mails calling for legislation and rules that will limit the overharvesting of the horseshoe crab, whose eggs Red Knots depend on. million in the late 1990’s. Should the gulls be controlled?

This last implies of course an improvement in ethics, as opposed to morality, as I have defined it, unless we already understand 'Do as you would be done by' as applicable to whales, cattle, chickens, and so on, as it is to human beings. I eat eggs though they may come from battery hens. I am myself not so heroic.

At sea there are also New Zealand Sea Lions and Southern Right Whales. The Centre takes kiwi eggs from the wild, when they are vulnerable to introduced predators, and rears them until they are old enough to survive in the wild. This is a good place to see the endangered and beautiful Yellowhead and the endemic Yellow-eyed Penguin.
