The end of September and early October is also the best time to see Oriental Scops Owls in Shanghai – though they can be hard to spot, being very good at hiding. If you think that these photos of the owl are sufficient … … you should probably skip the main part of this post. Better safe than sorry, I guess.

Not only does this species directly parasitize other species but also metaphorically, by imitating the sparrowhawks in its appearance and thus deterring potential predators. The photos of the dead cuckoo published in the paper would not look out of place in a horror movie for a cuckoo audience.

According to Wikipedia, “A l owl ife is a term for a person who is considered morally unacceptable by their community” The local Nanhui shrikes are well aware that the word “lowlife” has an owl hidden inside, and mark the appearance of owls in their territory with harsh protests. Not this one though.

Another Nanhui trip also brought a Northern Boobook , which eBird nicely describes as a “slender brown owl with comically expressive golden eyes” While one would think that such a fierce-looking bird mainly lives off larger prey, this is not the case. It did not seem to bother the owl much though. Oh, the excitement.
