Taking my usual route along Okaloosa Island’s Beasley Park, I noted Laughing Gulls , Brown Pelicans , a Snowy Plover or two, and the usual packs of Sanderlings. Unfortunately, their preferred habitat is also preferred by their human counterparts, lost to development or full of sunbathers and swimmers.

Multitudes, hundreds of Brown Pelicans and Terns–Least, Common, Foster’s, Sandwich, Royal, and Caspian. They did flush eventually, but not because of humans. Surprisingly, the Avocet area was not fenced off. I imagined walking right up to them. I also imagined that they would not flush, which is a real fantasy.

The island contains 80,000 breeding Sooty Terns, in addition to 4,500 breeding Brown Noddies and another 100 breeding pairs of the huge Magnificent Frigatebirds, not to mention pelicans, herons, Black Skimmers , other tern species, and so much more. Brown Pelicans are not an unusual sight on the California coast. But within a couple of decades, it’s effects on both wildlife and humanity became apparent. The most notorious effect is that their eggshells become so thin that a parent bird will crush it’s eggs while attempting to incubate them. Half Moon Bay, CA.
