Plus a few truly difficult species. Mandarin Ducks, Munich, Germany. Sure, it is an introduced species in Germany. These two shorebirds are exceedingly common in western Europe. So seeing this beautiful (though common) European species was a special treat. But they were still Mandarin Ducks!

Apparently, no one has ever made it very clear to the Wren that it is but 10 cm in length, Europe’s smallest species after the two Kinglets, at 9 cm each. Clearly, the “Eurasian” wren came off worst, with the most boring of names imaginable.

Yet, it takes great logistical effort to organize the census all the way from Germany to Austria, Hungary and Serbia in the same day, to count on numerous volunteers and hope for the best February weather. In the last year, a broken bustard eggshell was found, but since no displaying was observed, those could have been unfertilized eggs.
