Falakhe’s Story

10,000 Birds

It’s 3:30 AM when the night’s relative tranquility is shattered by the ancient Landranger’s engine roaring to life. Early starts are the rule when monitoring endagered species in Mkuze Game Reserve, in South Africa, but there’s a particular urgency to this morning’s start. The day before, the day I arrived, was a transport day, and that meant the pack hadn’t been seen in the afternoon.

How I Become a Birder

10,000 Birds

I think I was 19 when I made my first bucket list of things I’d like to do, from horse-back riding to sailing, rafting, caving, climbing… all sort of things Willie Garvin was good at (minus the knife throwing). Somewhere at the very back of the list was birdwatching. Why at the back? I knew nothing of it – but the fact that it had a geriatric image.

On Seeking a Sage Thrasher in the Rain

10,000 Birds

There’s a time, when you’ve been standing in the rain in the middle of a cow pasture in western North Carolina, amongst mud and cow dung and the unholy combination of the two, staring for the better part of an hour at an impossibly dense stand of brambles and shrub for a smallish streaky brown bird, that you begin to question your dedication to this birding thing.

The Urban Birds of Austin, Texas

10,000 Birds

Though I have been birding for a few years now, I had only birded west of the Mississippi once before my recent trip to Austin, Texas. Given how far west I found myself, I was hoping for at least a handful of new birds. I didn’t realize how many new species I would see within the city itself! Austin is growing rapidly, someone on the plane telling me the city added over a hundred people every day.

Branches for birds

10,000 Birds

I mentioned a few weeks ago that we had added a branch at Ellendale dam and pleased several species of birds and this is also the case for a branch that we added to a local ephemeral lake. It was also used straight away by a variety of birds and on returning a few weeks later it had become quite a hive of activity. There is no shade at this lake, so we sit in the shade of our vehicle and watch all of the activity.

Harris’s Sparrow in Loudonville, New York

10,000 Birds

When I heard back on 12 November that a Harris’s Sparrow was frequenting a feeder in Loudonville, New York, up where I learned to be a birder, in Albany County, I really wanted to go on the twitch. But I couldn’t get up there as quickly as I would have liked, what with life getting in the way and all, and it took until it had been around for a week before I could finally make the trip.

Where Are You Birding This Final Weekend of November 2015?

10,000 Birds

Turkey Day (apt for everyone but the turkeys themselves) is past and now the first world’s collective attention turns to highly conspicuous consumption. We birders are not entirely immune to materialism, but we also enjoy much that the world offers for free. Here’s a Black Friday challenge for you, assuming you can tear yourself away from your local big box: see how many birds with Black in their name you can find today.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of November 2015)

10,000 Birds

Mid-November tends to mark the point where the previous season gives way to the next one. Hope the birds of your next several months have started to settle in too! Because Corey was busy celebrating Desi’s upcoming birthday this weekend with a trip to Great Wolf Lodge in Pennsylvania’s Poconos, he didn’t get out on a single birding outing.
