GUYANA–Simply Delicious Birding!

10,000 Birds

Another lovely red skittle that I had the privilege of spotting on my first visit to Guyana in 2008 is the aptly-named Blood-colored Woodpecker found in the coastal areas in and around Georgetown. This diminutive woodpecker has even been spotted in the botanical gardens in the city.

The Reva Situation

10,000 Birds

Once I observed a man walking his two small dogs here, passing by a perched White-tailed Eagle but looking down at grass and not noticing the largest raptor in Europe at all. The eagle seemed well-used to people and paid no attention either. Reva had the semi-natural feeling of a forgotten green oasis at the outskirts of a busy city.

For some reason that is hard for me to fathom, there is no such bird as a Cape Woodpecker. The Common Waxbill looks like it belongs in a pet shop rather than in the wild. In fact, this is probably a species that has substantially expanded its original range through the pet shop route and the resulting escapees.

We had learnt from signs over the days we had been in Singapore that they have a problem with people dumping unwanted pets and we presume this to be the case in the reservoir. We had not been expecting to see a Banded Woodpecker and there we had one right in front of us. However, I do have some photographs of the Banded Woodpecker !

The Crested Serpent Eagle is another species bound to suffer from a naming error in perpetuity. Assuming that the (North American) Imperial Woodpecker and the Ivory-billed Woodpecker are both extinct, the Great Slaty Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker species alive. I am only joking! Birds should be free.

With that tragic news went any hopes of finding something like a Crested Eagle or Great Jacamar but it would still be exciting to visit. A delicious surprise and lunch made all the more memorable by the presence of tropical birds, good company, and a wild “pet” tarantula. What still lived there? The damaged forest.
