A bit larger than the Netherlands but with less land than Latvia and Ireland, in terms of territory, we rank 126. We might have limited space but we make up for it with a massive amount of biodiversity including well over 900 bird species on the official Costa Rica bird list.

Barn Swallows and Sand and House Martins left us in September, together with most heron species. This timing suites Britain and Netherlands well, I suppose, but Europe is somewhat larger than that.). White Storks left us in August and, by the end of the month, European Bee-eaters followed their example.

And I didn’t pay enough attention because one very dark eagle flew by at the same time, an adult Greater Spotted Eagle. Two hundred yards further, we found another Greater Spotted Eagle! Here in Serbia, in the south of the continent, this species is a proper rarity. And this one chose to fly right in front of us.

I also got to spend a few hours in the Netherlands. I therefore finished the year on a high note, seeing quite a few species I scarcely got to see during the previous years. So here they are, my top 10 bird species of 2016, in no particular order except for No. Lesser Spotted Eagle , Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.
