However – and I am not saying this out of misplaced national pride – there is one bird in the Netherlands that proves Jefferson wrong and Buffon right: the White-tailed Eagle (or Sea Eagle ). It’s the only Dutch eagle. Our eagle makes Baldy look imparfait, even a bit manqué. So it was this day.

This timing suites Britain and Netherlands well, I suppose, but Europe is somewhat larger than that.). The grand idea behind the Eurobirdwatch is to get as many people as possible exposed to birds and birding (or, to the virus of birding) – at the time when smaller birds are already gone, and the bigger ones haven’t arrived yet!

Two hundred yards further, the first Common Goldeneye and Smew started to appear and, while counting Smew and geese, a Great Bittern took flight from one stand of reeds to another, right in front of us. And I didn’t pay enough attention because one very dark eagle flew by at the same time, an adult Greater Spotted Eagle.

I also got to spend a few hours in the Netherlands. Lesser Spotted Eagle , Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Lesser Spotted Eagles breed regularly with around 100 pairs in Germany, but unless you know where the territories are you are unlikely to see them. Marsh Sandpiper , Den Oever, Netherlands.
