Whooper Swans winter in good numbers Around 20,000 Common Pochard winter on the lake A flock of Ferruginous Ducks (these were on nearby Lake Doirani on the border with North Macedonia ) One bird that has notably increased in numbers in recent years is the Common Crane , with January counts of up to 140 birds.

Neighbouring (FYRO) Macedonia nowadays has about 20 pairs, while two decades ago they had 135! And so, I was driving from Greece to Serbia… in central Macedonia, two birds were circling not far from the motorway… black and white (above)… perhaps White Storks on migration? Reasons for this situation are numerous.

Imperial and Booted are the rarest eagles in the country, the first with only one heavily guarded pair left. White-tailed Eagles become more visible and locally more numerous, joined by rare, yet regular Greater Spotted Eagles. In the last ten years, Cattle Egrets have bred again, on and off, but for the first time since 1870s.

Triklario/Sfika, SE of the lake), Golden Eagle , Barred Warbler , Rufous-tailed Rock Thrush , Black-headed Bunting , etc. My recommendation?

The sun rises over the village of Chrysochorafa, by Kerkini Lake in the north of Greece, not far from the triple border with Bulgaria and FYRO Macedonia. In the end, my eagle goes toward the slopes of 2 km high Mt. As soon as it disappears, another eagle – Short-toed Snake Eagle appears, with a snake half dangling from its beak.

Here go those moments of curiosity, in no particular order: Europe: And so, I was driving from Greece to Serbia… in central FYRO Macedonia, two birds were circling not far from the motorway… black and white… perhaps White Storks on migration? The bull weighing almost two tones stopped at the edge of the clearing to sniff the air.

The Prespa Lakes National Park in Greece is well hidden among the mountains at the triple border with Albania in the west and the FYRO Macedonia in the north. Back to the Mikri Prespa , where mostly Dalmatian, with two White Pelicans among them, were circling, while one Short-toed Snake Eagle glided across.
