And while we’re at it, I think it’s time to open a limited season on Bald Eagles. We’ve always hunted Bald Eagles. I get it now, I really do.

Avian-themed teams simply don’t do very well in the big game. The Baltimore Ravens crushed my beloved New York Giants in Super Bowl XXXV (2001) to become football’s finest feathered franchise. Analysts ascribe New England’s dominance in the modern era to the Belichick-Brady axis of insane preparation and execution.

Returning to New York, however briefly, has been a joyful reunion — not just with old friends, but with my beloved, quirky New York City birds. Shortly after I arrived I got word of the Gray-hooded Gull at Coney Island, and of course I went after it right away.

I know you can bird in dark in New York and Newcastle, Weyburn and Walla Walla. He told me where he’d found them, and we hung up and I went back to my card game. Birds like American Coots and Long-eared Owls in Arviat, to Bald Eagles in Whale Cove.
