Waterfowl at Baisley Pond Park in Winter

10,000 Birds

My visit on Saturday morning was meant to be a quick stop to scan the ducks, geese, and gulls to see if anything interesting was around. The Ruddy Ducks looked miserable but the grebe and the coots seemed to be doing fine. Such a cold Ruddy Duck. Iceland Gulls look good even when surrounded by goose poop.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of February 2018)

10,000 Birds

I finally found one of those Lesser Black-backed Gulls I’ve been chasing all winter, a worthy replacement for the rare geese I hoped to find at Braddock Bay’s North Marina. Following the easy tick of a long-staying Harlequin Duck at the pier in Rodanthe, things got harder.

As the tide falls: an hour at Brancaster Staithe

10,000 Birds

The American name of Mew Gull is better Herring Gull : a bit of a thug in both looks and behaviour In contrast to the gulls and waders, all the ducks were dressed in their smartest finery. As the tide fell, it exposed sand banks that attracted small parties of garrulous Brent Geese. Norfolk’s Pinkfooted geese are another success story.

The Queens List Won’t Stop Growing

10,000 Birds

Harlequin Duck – There were several birds seen in Queens this winter that I either missed or could not get out to chase. Ross’s Goose – I recently blogged about this bird sighting , a bird that was well-earned at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge as it was camouflaged by well over a thousand Snow Geese.
