He asked whether cows, chickens, sheep and some of the other animals that we eat are usually treated and killed in a humane manner. The meat industry will say yes, of course, all animals are treated and killed humanely. The eventual kill is quick, clean, and painless. It's a thoughtful question I wish more people would ask.

The Blue-tongued Lizard that was also having the same experience was definitely not as excited and was trying its hardest to protect itself. The Wedge-tailed Eagle only had a meal on its mind and I only had photographs and the health and welfare of a lizard on my mind.

Both animal rights groups and animal welfare groups use "compassion" frequently. Then again, so do people who kill animals for a living. After all, they "love" the animals they kill. Nonviolence" is much more difficult to finesse if you're killing animals for a living. It's a minuscule drop in an ever-overflowing bucket.

Francione has defined abolition in a certain way and if you don't adhere strictly to his definition, you are not a Francione-style abolitionist. would call HSUS an animal rights group (after all, HSUS doesn't even do that).

Seriously, folks, if you are going to respect someone, you're not going to hold them captive and kill them. It involves not killing them. Not eating them.

He then says he goes to "exceptional lengths" to make ensure the physical and psychological welfare of the primates he uses, "except when it's absolutely necessary" to harm them.
