In my opinion, and I am a vegetarian, the second definition of humane is the MINIMAL that we should expect. However, the factory farm system we have in any country does not lend itself to either of the two criteria. There is definitely a problem with gang violence, especially in Fresno. It's farm country and you have a lot of farmers and ag types who treat companion animals as little better than livestock. And of course, let's not discuss factory farms down there. It's not as well-educated, sophisticated, healthy or well-off.

Paragraph #4 starts with: "Undeniably, neither I nor anyone I know advocates or even tolerates the inhumane treatment of farm animals."
