Returning to St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge

Deer wade into the shallows to munch on marsh grass, trailing fawns behind them. A raccoon investigates crabs on the mud flats. The highlight for me in the inland wetlands remains a Marbled Godwit , my first. The sun sets over the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. Here, birds make up only some of the wildlife sightings.

The Great Bustard Search is On (2)

David Grabovac and I stopped by the roadside, scanned the distant fields and spotted some 15 Roe Deer but no bustards, drove a bit further, scanned the horizon, drove further yet and there they were. Quickly, all teams in the vicinity were warned of the discovery, so we all drove back to find and observe them. The rain thankfully stopped.

There’s a Three-striped Palm Squirrel by the side of the track, while Jungle Bush Quails are running across it in front of our Maruti Gypsy, almost the official safari vehicle of India.
