Abby, I too get very upset by stories and images of what occurs every second of every day to nonhumans and humans alike. The suffering in this world that occurs at the hand of humankind and is entirely intentional, is disgusting and dispiriting. I choose not to watch videos or bombard myself with images of suffering.

In fact, animals used for food do suffer a great deal. Not only are they killed in cruel ways, but it is well documented that they are raised in ways that cause them great discomfort and agony. As reported in the AP story, two styles of Sean John jackets—one a hooded snorkel style, the other a classic version—were originally advertised as faux fur, but an investigation by the Humane Society of the United States [ HSUS ] found that the jackets were made from dog fur. Why is the dog subjected to such unspeakable cruelty?
