He asked whether cows, chickens, sheep and some of the other animals that we eat are usually treated and killed in a humane manner. The meat industry will say yes, of course, all animals are treated and killed humanely. In my opinion, the crux of the question touches on what is “humane.”

A state law mandating "humane treatment" of downed livestock headed for the slaughterhouse was unanimously overturned Monday by the Supreme Court. Read the full story at CNN. Several justices had earlier noted the good intentions behind the state action, but all now agreed that it went too far into the traditional federal arena.

Bea sent me a link to an article in Gourmet called " Humane Slaughterhouses ," by Rebecca Marx, that is absurd. And the absurdity is in the reality that the author and the featured person who kills sentient nonhumans for a living, think they're onto something. It's a cow who--who--lived an allegedly happy life.

Logically, he admits it does make perfect sense to eat dogs if you eat pigs and cows. He writes: There is a rational, and for some people a spiritual, case for being a vegetarian: Killing animals is wrong. It's a bit difficult to take on the soul question for human or nonhuman animals, particularly for an atheist.

There is a rational, and for some people a spiritual, case for being a vegetarian: Killing animals is wrong. If you eat meat you cannot logically find it morally or ethically repugnant to eat a particular meat (I’m setting cannibalism aside here.). But as Cohen experiences, humans don't live "in theory."
