There will be no greyhound corpse on our table, no turkey corpse and no pig corpse. And I want Baby Sky to grow up in a home where there is just as much respect for chickens and calves and fishes as there is for greyhounds and cats and people. Of course, the world outside of our home tells a different story. Because it tastes good.

And I received confirmation of something I've known since 2004, when we adopted retired racing greyhound, Violet Rays: That there's sort of a critical period for dog-behavior acquisition, and if it's missed, the dog isn't likely to mature into the type of loving being whose behavior we've come to associate with "pet" dogs. Would I ever say I restrict my diet to food that wasn't made from the parts of creatures as sentient as the greyhounds I share my home with? Perhaps they are taught that other cultures eat animals other than cows, chickens, fish and pigs, I don't know. The kids prepared Buddhist delight that "conformed to Buddhist dietary restrictions."

The underlying premise is that you can know what is right (such as me knowing what's right then eating cow flesh in the form of filet mignon for a year), but that by no means will necessarily manifest in your behavior. Hence the psychological continuum described (below) by Austria's Association Against Animal Factories from about a year ago.

I chose a cow for Sky's first stuffed animal, and I hope that she will grow up to honor and respect the lives of cows the same way she will honor and respect the lives of greyhounds. Much of the baby clothing has animals on it, and animals are of course the focus of stuffies and other toys.
