This is partly due to hunting in China, where about 90% of the species winter (HBW). Of course, Little Egrets like to eat fish. Like fast food, but free and likely more healthy. And it does not even live in reeds. Sadly, the numbers of Falcated Duck are similarly declining – it is thus listed as Near Threatened.

Let’s say you’re at a fast food restaurant and you have a few french fries left over and a gull is eagerly staring at you and the fries. Wild birds should not be coming up to people looking for food. Of course, this doesn’t bother the birds but it does bother people. Do you toss the bird your leftovers?

Of course, I contacted Carlos Sanchez , alleged south Florida birder extraordinaire, to maximize the returns on what time I could spend. Then he pointed out a Least Tern that came in to hunt for fish on the pond as if I would be assuaged with another bird that has “Least” in its name! Of course not!
