Whereas it once used to be argued, as by Newman , that the least human good compensates for any possible amount of animal suffering, the current doctrine is that it requires a considerable good to compensate for such suffering. Biological warfare against human beings is generally condemned but not biological warfare against animals.

The suffering in this world that occurs at the hand of humankind and is entirely intentional, is disgusting and dispiriting. I choose not to watch videos or bombard myself with images of suffering. In other words, I don't immerse myself in animal cruelty. So I do what I can do, beginning of course with being vegan.

Herzog states, “The awkward fact is that most wanton animal cruelty is not perpetrated by inherently bad kids but by normal children who will eventually grow up to be good citizens” (34). . Of course I was appalled, but out there in the mainstream world, she is an outlier. Of course that can be debated.

The reason that the industry is losing the argument is quite simple: There is no ethical justification for causing an animal to suffer unnecessarily. Cruelty cannot stand the spotlight, and the Internet has made it impossible for factory farmers to hide the cruelty inherent in their intensive confinement operations.
