As far as countries go, Costa Rica is at the smaller end of the spectrum. A bit larger than the Netherlands but with less land than Latvia and Ireland, in terms of territory, we rank 126. With good reason, lots of birders visit Costa Rica and we also have a good sized local birding community.

This wonderful Yellow Wagtail ( Motacilla flava ) was entered by user geerta (Netherlands) early on in the competition and was one of the first photos in this year’s competition that really made me sit up. Well, who could not enjoy that wealth of colour?

The Rose-ringed Parakeet’s European (=feral) range is surprisingly coherent for an introduced bird that is dependent on large metropolitan areas, and the species occurs in very decent numbers from UK’s London throughout the Netherland’s large cities all the way up along the Rhine to Germany’s Heidelberg.
