How to get yourself out of bed on cold, dark, pre-dawn winter mornings, where to find the nearest landfill, how to convince officers of the law that you aren’t doing anything more than watching birds. But, not all weather is crazy and most of it can be birded, even during the rainy season in Costa Rica, you can actually see a lot!

This Yellow Warbler was looking fresh before it left Costa Rica. In Costa Rica, I’m not sure if we will get as much competitive participation as last year, but I do suspect that a lot of people will just be out there birding and submitting the results to eBird.

Or, it’s just “bad luck”, that the laws of probability just have not worked in your favor. However, if there’s a good thing about the laws of probability and birding, it’s that the longer you don’t see a bird when you “should”, the more likely you will see that bird with every try.

Reschedule that visit to the in-laws, cancel the company picnic and drop everything else because GBD is in the house! This happens in Peru, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and other major birdy places because GBD isn’t just viewed as a day to watch birds. Need to do laundry? Paint the porch? Go to traffic school?

However, it wasn’t until the infamous year of 2020 that I finally laid eyes on it in the marshes of Las Pangas in southern Costa Rica. A non-bird Best Bird of the Year? Preposterous! This weird little skulking waterfowl is a species I had hoped to chance upon in various places for quite some time.
