As far as countries go, Costa Rica is at the smaller end of the spectrum. A bit larger than the Netherlands but with less land than Latvia and Ireland, in terms of territory, we rank 126. With good reason, lots of birders visit Costa Rica and we also have a good sized local birding community.

Graham Clarke liked Dotterel , a bird he needed for Ireland. Dotterel are not exceptionally rare in Ireland occurring during both spring and autumn migration. 2012 was one of my best years for birding in Costa Rica. And you should definitely check out their mouthwatering list !

In April 2022, the Collaborative submitted 216 checklists from 4 countries ( Costa Rica , United States , Mexico , and the United Kingdom ) and observed 735 species. The 2022 year list stands at 1,023, and the life rises by a single species ( Great Swallow-tailed Swift seen in Mexico) to 4,114.

12 beats visited 12 countries (USA, UK, Costa Rica, Ghana, Nigeria, New Zealand, Serbia, Ireland, Australia, Mexico, China and Argentina), sharing 148 lists along the way and noting 844 species (old and new). Not to be out-done, the beats have been out doing their thing as well. They have pushed the year list beyond 2K.
