You purposefully choose to ignore facts like that though when citing the "cruelty and injustice" involved in the rearing and slaughter of animals. A few patient individuals chose to respond to Spencer R, and I'd like to deconstruct his comment and add my own response because what he writes isn't uncommon in its tone or its content.

The Dodo and the Solitaire is a large, handsome book that offers as complete a record as is now possible of these two birds, cousins slaughtered so quickly and completely that the world may never fully understand exactly what was lost. Parish is not content to merely report on the trageo-comedic history of early Dodo studies*, however.

What is amazing is that each of these three books is very different in content and tone. Still, I can’t help thinking that there is some parallel between the mass slaughter of the Passenger Pigeon in 19th-century North America and the mass slaughter of songbirds in southern European countries today.

Meanwhile, I'm sure that writers whose style I have a problem with will say, "I don't have the time or the inclination to write the sort of dispassionate, tepid prose you prefer while tens of billions of sentient nonhumans are being enslaved and slaughtered for no good reason." And I understand that point.
