According to Wikipedia, these birds are good at multitasking, being “in some parts of its range … known as a symbol of luck, longevity, and fidelity” As in humans, “the social implications of dancing [among the cranes] are complex in meaning” ( source ). If everybody did this, the result would be chaos.

The research, much of the time, doesn’t support the conventional wisdom (which is not to say the case is closed on any issue).

UNLESS that is you get yourself down to the internationally-renowned Tambopata Research Centre in southern Peru where literally hundreds of macaws (and other parrots) congregate around a 50 meter high clay bank. Each bird, regardless of species, seems perfectly content to wait for the other to make the first move toward the colpa.

A little bit of research when I got home unraveled the ways of publishers here and in Great Britain. The accounts aim for specificity and authority; dates and locations of rarity sightings are given, and research articles on nesting and behavior are cited. Even during the breeding season the birds appear to be quite unwary of humans.
