I stuffed it in my pocket and decided to take it to Richard Oehlenschlager at the Science Museum of Minnesota. He asked to take the pellet downstairs to do some comparisons to the collections. But those feathers didn’t match and the beak looked too small. There was also a mammal jawbone in the pellet too.

If this comparison bothers you, here’s something to comfort you (but not me): Donald Trump will be the next US president, the squirrel will not. Which sounds like a species name taken from a science fiction novel for children.

Unfortunately, Hen Harriers die disproportionally near British Grouse moors – most likely killed illegally by people hunting grouse for sports ( source ). Though to be historically accurate, the breaking wheel would be a better comparison. I wish there was a way to give some guns to Hen Harriers so that they could shoot back.
