Of course, it wouldn’t be October in central Mexico without a collection of different hummingbirds. They love underbrush, and are usually seen in pairs.

Fortunately, I had managed a collection of very bad photos before the bird flew off. Most of our readers are not likely to be able to ID this bird, because it only occurs in Mexico and Guatemala. And then the bird was gone. And when I got home, they showed exactly what I needed to confirm my ID: See it?

What is a Catbird?

It is the only species in the genus Dumetella and most likely the only catbird most birders will ever see; the Black Catbird Melanoptila glabrirostris , also of a monotypic genus, is found only in Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala, and is the only other species of catbird in the New World.
